A Small and Stable Kayak
This is the boat that broke all records at Ashes … in the first 12 days after having been released, her plans were downloaded nearly 450 times by builders in more than 20 countries. In retrospect it makes complete sense, she’s a compact kayak that appeals to paddlers in search of a stable platform for fishing, photography, or quiet evenings exploring back waters and protected bays. And not only that, to our eye, she has the prettiest lines in the business!
Those who choose these kayak plans should keep in mind that the drawings come with all the dimensions, full-size templates, and lines necessary to build a cedar strip kayak. The plans however, do not come with building directions. First timers would be well advised to choose a good book about strip-kayak building, or spend some time online viewing some of the many video tutorials.
If you were to ask us what book we’d advise you to read before starting, we’d say pick-up Ted Moore’s classic: Kayak Craft; Fine Woodstrip Kayak Construction.
Also, given her relatively short length and 26″ beam, the curves might present a bit of a challenge for first time builder. With a bit a patience, however, and willingness to make a mistake or two along the way, even those who have never built a kayak before will find that building a beautiful kayak is well within their ability. If you have any questions, we’re here to answer them … just ask, Contact Ashes.
